Campers Pie Iron

If you were a scout or went camping as a child then you may have cooked pies on the fire.

Wonderful little desserts or full meals, you choose your own fillings.

Campers Hot Pies

Make every Camp Fire, Fire Place BBQ Grill, Hibachi, and Stove Top a gourmet kitchen by making fresh individual personal pies. Let everyone choose their favorite flavors.

All you need are Bread, Butter, and what ever filling you want to use and of course a pie iron. My favorites are pizza or spaghetti (putting a little garlic powder on the outside of the bread makes a spaghetti pie with a toasted garlic bread shell) This was the best way to get rid of leftover spaghetti before microwaves.

They are easy to make and easy to eat.

Pie irons have been around for hundreds of years. And have been called many things pioneer pies, hot pies, hobo pies, and campers pies.

They also came in many different shapes and sizes. We experimented a lot to come up with our design and the material we make them out of. You can find cheap tin pie cookers in most department stores. Most of them are square tin stampings. They make pies that taste like dry scorched toast! They are so thin that the part that touches a coal will burn fast but the rest of the pie is still cold.

We designed our iron to radiate the heat evenly. To help with heat radiation we made it round with rings in the castings to radiate the heat. Our irons are also thick about 1/4"thick!

We special order an alloy of metal that is approved by the FDA for cooking and also has good radiating qualities. Then we sand cast it so that the metal structure keeps it natural flow pattern. Ever wonder why cast iron skillet cooks so much better then a similar skillet stamped out of steel? It is the casting. Castings are poured and stampings are stamped. Metal has structure in it that is made when the metal is poured and then sets up. Heat radiates along the same paths the metal flowed and hardened in. When you stamp metal it changes these flow patterns and thus stops the heat from properly radiating out to the edges.

Another reason to make them round is that it totally changes the taste of the pie if you cut off the edges of the bread with the iron sealing everything inside.

When my family goes camping we like to look for people who have never camped and invite them over to our fire for pies. We make sure they do not see us put the pie together. Then we cook one and have them try it and tell us what it is made of. No one ever guesses that it is bread. It is important for that special taste that the bread be big enough to cover the whole iron so it gets cut and sealed all the way around. (Some economy loaves are a little too small).

We also designed a stove top model so you can enjoy our pies at home in side. (The only difference is the length of the handles)

Stove top iron measures approximately 12.5" long, the camp fire iron measures about 31.5" long

Irons hinge with a hook and loop design that can easily be separated to remove the pie

The rods are made of 1/4" all thread rod the threads help to radiate the heat away. The grips are cast aluminum. You may need to use hot pads if your fire is large or if you are using the stove top model.

Because our irons are designed to cut the bread off sealing the pie there is no spring tention on the iron and nothing is needed to hold the irons shut while cooking. You do need to hold both handles while moving or turning the pie.
